What Is a Sketch Storyboard for AI Video?

A sketch storyboard is a visual plan for a video before the final shots exist. It can be loose, monochrome, and full of construction marks. Its job is to make the order of actions, the camera, and the ending understandable. For a beginner, a storyboard is often the clearest way to explain an idea to an AI agent.

What a storyboard should show

Each panel should answer one visible question. Where is the subject? What is the subject doing? Where is the camera? What changes before the next panel? A rough graphite drawing can answer these questions without pretending to be finished art.

Use a small set of panels for a first test. An opening storyboard might show an empty coat rack, a figure entering from behind, a bag being hung, a chair pulled back, and a laptop opening. Those simple beats establish screen direction before the story becomes more elaborate.

How an AI agent uses it

Codex can read the storyboard as a planning reference and translate its panels into a canvas brief. Ask the agent to preserve the panel order, camera axis, and end state, while keeping the sketch borders and notes out of the final video. Then read back the proposed model, references, duration, and aspect ratio.

Frequently asked questions

Does a storyboard need polished drawings?

No. Clear silhouettes and actions are more useful than surface detail.

How many panels should a beginner make?

Use four to eight panels for a small experiment, then add panels when timing needs more precision.

Can the storyboard become the final image?

It can inspire the art direction, but the final image should be prepared as its own clean reference.
